Opening Doors - Unlocking Potential 2017 (11th Annual State-wide Professional Development Institute For Teachers of Students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing, SLPs and Educators Who Work Directly with Students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing)

Description:

This year's two-day ODUP Institute, Virginia’s Go-To event designed to increase the knowledge and skills of teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing (TODHH) and other educators working directly with students who are d/hh, will focus on effective strategies, assessments and more to positively impact outcomes for students who are deaf and hard of hearing and have additional concerns (i.e., D/HH Plus).
Keynote speaker, Dr. Christen Szymanski, who has done significant direct practice with children who are d/hh with additional disabilities and their families as well as research in the field, will share her perspectives on the impact of autism and other developmental disabilities as they pertain to children who are d/hh, their families and those who serve them.

Nicole Schroeer M.S.Ed, BCBA, LBA will conduct a general session on using behavioral principles with students who are d/hh to reduce behaviors that interfere with learning. All attendees will receive the acclaimed book The Behavior Code Companion by Jessica Minahan which will be used as a practice tool and take-home resource so participants can immediately apply learned concepts to challenging situations. Participants will have the option of continuing with Nicole for two in-depth sessions with hands-on practice of ABA-based assessments, data collection, and interventions designed for use in schools and outlined in the books, The Behavior Code, and The Behavior Code Companion to obtain an additional short-course certificate.
