Transportation Options for Students with Disabilities: Getting to/from School Factsheet for Virginia's Parents (PEATC)

Description:

Checkout the Transportation Options for Students with Disabilities: Getting to/from School Factsheet for Virginia's Parents -Did you know that bus drivers and other transportation staff have an important role in supporting students with disabilities? The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) reminds schools that when transportation is written into a student’s IEP or 504 Plan, it’s not just about getting a ride, it’s a legally required service that ensures a student’s right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).

This means transportation staff must be informed about the specific supports and accommodations each student needs to ride safely and successfully. If these supports aren’t provided, it could result in a denial of services and serious consequences for the school division.

What can families do? If your child has transportation listed in their IEP or 504 Plan, make sure you understand what supports are included and how they are being implemented. Don’t hesitate to ask your child’s team for clarification or follow up with the school if something doesn’t seem right.
